1/21 Earth Science update and homework due 1/28

Hi folks,

Today we took a broad look at weather by studying a variety of different weather maps from the internet. We also spent a bit more time learning about how air is affected by temperature and how that influences the rising and falling of air masses.

For homework this week:

Read pages 453 to 457

Answer the following questions using the book and your lecture notes:

1. When does water vapor in the air condense?


2. What is the difference between humidity and relative humidity?


3. Define the term weather in your own words.


4. Does hot air rise or fall?


5. How does the rising and falling of air cause winds? (Draw a picture for this.)


6. Explain what happened when I put red food coloring in the two different glasses. Be sure to explain why that happened.


7. If you are presently in a high pressure system, will the sky be mostly cloudy or will there be very few clouds?


8. What direction does weather generally move across the U.S.?


9. What causes the Coriolis effect?


10. Does the Coriolis effect effect the direction water spins when you flush the toilet? Why or why not?
