Today in class we spent some time working with the Coriolis effect and trying to figure out how high and low pressure systems work. We also created a thermometer using a plastic bottle, water, rubbing alcohol and a straw.
For homework please answer the following questions.
1. Why does the thermometer you made in class need an air tight seal?
2. What did the hand activity show you about high and low pressure systems?
3. Why did the balloon expand when I put the bottle into the hot water?
4. Why did the balloon contract (shrink) when I put the bottle into the cold water?
5. What is the Coriolis effect and how does it effect the winds on the Earth?
6. What would the winds do if there was no Coriolis effect?
7. If the was no Coriolis effect, how would that effect the weather?
8. What is the difference between climate and weather?
9. Why did the "snake" you made spin when it was held over the candle?
10. What does expanding and shrinking air have to do with the weather?
11. It's a clear nice sunny day. Is it probably high pressure or low pressure?
